For Immediate Release
27 January 2008
Team Singapore’s 8 teams will return today from the 4th ASEAN Para Games, equivalent of the SEA Games for athletes with disability, with seven gold, eight silver and four bronze medals.
The swim team is the proud winner of all seven gold medals for Singapore’s tally. The team of 15 also returns with 13 personal bests, and 1 new world record set by Theresa Goh. The team will be the sole recipients of the Athletes Achievement Awards (AAA) announced recently, under which ASEAN Para Games’ gold medalists will be rewarded S$1000 each.
The athletics team is flying back with 2 silver medals from Nazariah Bte Ahmadini while Dr William Tan Kian Meng, renowned marathoner, adds another silver and bronze. The amateur 4x400m men’s team, comprising Fitri B Amran, Mohd Fadli Bin Baba, Mohd Khairul B Kanmis and Timothy Wang, also performed extraordinarily when they broke the ASEAN Para Games record and won the bronze medal on the last day. In total, the team of 19 track and field athletes return with 23 personal bests for their records.
This is the first time Singapore’s athletes with disability have won medals for Boccia and Badminton in an international tournament. It is an especially meaningful win for the boccia and badminton teams, who are first-timers to the ASEAN Para Games.
Boccia player Jeralyn Tan Yee Ting brings back a silver in BC2 Individuals, while team mate Oh Boon Keng swipes the bronze in BC4 Individuals. Shuttler Tay Wei Ming set a grand finale for Singapore when he won the silver in Men’s Singles on the final day of competition.
The teams will return to Singapore tonight at Changi Airport Terminal 2 via SQ631 (arrival at 7.05 pm) and SQ625 (arrival at 9.55 pm). A Team Singapore welcome back ceremony will begin from 7 pm. Mr Henry Tan, Chef de Mission for the 4th ASEAN Para Games and Vice-President of the Singapore Disability Sports Council, will be presenting garlands to the athletes and officials.
